Facial Veins

Facial veins are broken blood vessels. You may also know them as facial telangiectasia, rosacea veins or spider veins. No matter what you call them, everyone agrees they cause a lot of distress for some men & women. It is easy to see how facial spider veins make you feel self-conscious and embarrassed in social and work situations.

Facial veins often appear as tiny red veins on the nose and/or cheek area. Yet, they can also be visible as large bluish veins around the temples, eyes or nasolabial folds.

What Causes Facial Veins?

Facial veins are a normal part of aging, sun exposure, genetics, rosacea, medications (steroids), pregnancy, liver disease, or inherited disorders. Larger varicose veins on the face and neck can be an inherited venous malformation. These malformations are typically present at birth or appear in early childhood. These require a more thorough evaluation and complex treatment plan.

Couperose facial veins are very tiny spider veins, usually seen on the nose or cheeks, and are also treated by sclerotherapy, except with finer needles.

Sclerotherapy Treatment For Facial Veins

Facial vein treatment is determined by the diameter and location of the veins. For this reason, at the Yorkville Vein Clinic, each case is evaluated by a vein specialist. In most cases, sclerotherapy can be performed using finer needles.

Typically, the large blue veins respond best to sclerotherapy. Advances in magnification devices and smaller needles have made it possible to inject tiny facial veins. Most importantly, sclerotherapy limits the damage done to the surrounding tissue.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is an accepted treatment for facial veins due to its precise nature. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a sclerosing solution directly into the non-functioning vein. The solution works by causing the dilation of your vein to diminish, and the vein will permanently shut and be naturally absorbed back into the body.

Other forms of vein disease, such as varicose veins, involve the bodies of larger veins. It is much easier to find these veins and treat them effectively, but spider veins are significantly smaller! Because of their tiny and thin size (sometimes these veins are as small as a needle tip!) it can be difficult for other forms of treatment. Sclerotherapy is also a minimally invasive procedure that is overall safe, and does not require significant recovery time. In fact, most patients are able to get up and leave right after their procedure is over. Some patients may have mild side effects such as an allergic reaction or inflammation after the procedure is completed, but these side effects typically fade within a day or two.
